Looking forward to Love Supreme 2019: TLG's top picks from the line-up

Our favourite jazz festival is back in a couple of weeks with an unrivalled line-up to supply all your funky needs. Taking place in Glynde, East Sussex (a short trip from Brighton) the event will last for 3 days from July 5th – 7th - tickets are still available here.

Love Supreme 2017

Headliners include Lauryn Hill, Gladys Knight, Jimmy Cliff, Chick Corea and Snarky Puppy. You can view the full line-up and stage schedules here, and at the bottom of the page, but we have chosen our favourites aside from the big names - here are our picks from each of the stages…

MAIN STAGE

Tank and the Bangas - Saturday 14:15

Who could ever forget the energy of Tank and the Bangas’ legendary Tiny Desk back in 2017? Who could possibly rival their exquisite attitude and funkiness? Very few, and we can guarantee that their Main Stage performance will be one to remember.

Mahalia - Sunday 16:45

Leicester-born goddess who’s album Love and Compromise is set for release in September 2019. Her synthy, jazzy R&B features catchy yet quirky melodies and irresistibly toe-tapping grooves.

BANDS & VOICES

A new stage added this year will be featuring spoken word, music and dance.

Shunaji - Friday 16:45

Spoken word artist, MC, singer and producer, born in Lagos, raised in Rome and based in London.

Linton Kwesi Johnson - Saturday 18:45

The legendary Jamaican dub poet rose to fame in 70s London, often collaborating with reggae artist Dennis Bovell. His work, covering experiences of an African-Caribbean living in the UK, as well as other social and political issues, is often performed alongside music.

BIG TOP

Sampa The Great - Friday 19.15

Singer-songwriter and rapper. Her hip hop has an old school feel, with influences cited as Mos Def and Chance The Rapper. Expect a super engaging, high-energy performance.

Judi Jackson - Saturday 15.15

She’s opened for Mavis Staples, recorded with Snarky Puppy and has a sweet soulful sound, accompanied by a killer band.

THE ARENA

Charlotte Dos Santos - Sunday 15:45

JAZZ IN THE ROUND

Home to the late-night live performances.

Bukky Leo & Black Egypt Presents The Legend of William Onyeabor - Friday 00:30

BANDSTAND

The Bandstand, programmed by The Verdict Jazz Club, will showcase some of the best acts from East Sussex and the surrounding area.

North Ark - Sunday 16:45

There’s something for everyone with the North Ark - bandleader and pianist Joe Hill’s original compositions and tasteful arrangements of classics such as ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ are easy on the ear but inventive and unique.

Zenel - Saturday 18:00

Psychedelic, electronic, virtuosic - you name it, Zenel can do it. The BBC Young Musician 2016 finalists will blow you away.

As well as all the outstanding performances, you can also attend the ‘Jazz Lounge, which will feature artist Q&As, panels, exclusive album playbacks and film screenings; a number of kids areas including the vintage funfair; early morning salsa classes; late night jam sessions; long table banqueting; secret swimming and much more.’ Additional info available here.
